Poor Jack Sparrow

We took Jack to the vet today. We had to have him neutered. He had to wear the dreaded cone. It was probably the saddest and funniest thing I have seen. He is running into walls, my legs, the furniture, doors, Louis, his own legs. He was out of control. He would not stop whining. I'm sure he was really uncomfortable. I felt really bad for him.

I have been researching new and exciting recipes to try. Some things like kale chips... Sound awful! I feel like we should try them anyway.

Well, don't worry because I will say if it is awful! Also, I'm not the best cook. Sooo... I will probably have to spell every little step out. Heck, I didn't even know what it meant to broil something. I had to google it. So... get excited for more to come!

Tofu Dogs = Dogs eat Tofu

So my boyfriend and I are trying to eat less meat and eat a bit healthier. We tried tofu dogs last night with little success. I made pigs in a blanket and also put a tofu dog in the baked beans. The baked beans were good because you couldn't taste the tofu dogs. Unfortunately, the pigs in a blanket were a mass failure. I managed to eat mine by smothering it in ketchup and mustard, but he barely choked his down. My boyfriend said they reminded him of elementary cafeteria food. That can't be a compliment. Needless to say, they became dog food snacks. Sorry tofu dogs, but you are disgusting!

Crazy gals in ATX

Well, I went to Austin for Labor Day weekend. It was crazy fun! A bunch of my girlfriends and Theta sisters met up to paar-ty! We always have one too many drinks, but it is always a good time.

We rented a boat out on Lake Travis. It was crazy busy! There were people all over the place. In Oklahoma, you put on a dirty swimsuit with no makeup, and you are ready for the lake. Apparently in Texas, going to the lake is like going to the club. You put on some sparkles and fashion with your hair did and makup done. We also drove by hippy hallow (sp?). It is a nude beach. NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT! I did not know whether to laugh or set my eyes on fire.

Since we were in Texas, we ate Mexican food for pretty much every meal. We had some breakfast tacos. We ate some delicious migas for Sunday brunch at Stubbs. The gospel music was a lot of fun!

We also went to Chuy's. I got a veggie enchilada and a Mexican Martini. Both were excellent! I have to say after all that food. I feel like I gained ten pounds!

No more delicious, carbonated beverages

My boyfriend and I are trying to stay away from soda. I can drink 2-3 diet dr. peppers in one day, and he can drink 4-5 in a day. We have gotten really bad about it. We decided to stop buying it in hope we will drink less soda. If we really want it bad enough, we have to get up off our lazy behinds and drive to Sonic or 7-11 to get it.

I know for him it is a lot of extra calories because he drinks regular soda. I always drink diet, but I know it cannot be healthy for you.

Anyways, we will see how well we do.

Where does it come from and what's in it?

My boyfriend and I have been trying to eat more healthy. I have been cooking more rather than ordering take out. We have been trying to eat less red meat and chicken. We eat more fish, more veggies and more fruits.

As I learn more and more about food, I wonder where the did this come from and how did it get in my kitchen? The more I learn about red meat, the more I don't want to eat it. Is it true that there are up to a hundred cows in one meat patty? Where are those cows? Are they steer? I'm sure there is plenty of research out in cyberland about these facts, but I just pose it as a question to think about.

My boyfriend studies anthopology. In one of his classes, he had to read about processed chicken. A lot of the pictures and facts were pretty disgusting. His book would probably deter a lot of people from thinking about processed chicken for a long time. Although I do love chicken nuggest every now and then, I hate to think about what I am actually eating.

We bought a gallon of milk last night. My boyfriend noticed that it said it was from a neighboring state. Strange... since there is a dairy farm about an hour away from where we live. I want that farm's milk. It's the same brand, but it came from a different state? Hmmmm....

Then, there is always the comparison of organic vs. conventional. I read an article yesterday about this subject. I am going to try to buy more of our produce organic, but sometimes it is just easier and less expensive to buy conventional. Although, I do love farmer's markets.

I would love to buy all organic and all health food or vegan or vegetarian substitutes, but the problem is how much it would increase my grocery bill. Also, I like a lot of variety. I have read a lot of health food blogs and what people are eating. It seems like a lot of them eat the same things over and over. They like to buy the same spreads, oats, fruits and so on. We get bored of the same things pretty quickly. So, I am always trying to find different recipes. I will buy something because it looks interesting and then figure out how to cook it or put it together in a meal.

I suppose my entire point of this post is...
  • I would love to be more healthy in my eating habits.
  • I like organic produce and food, but it can get expensive.
  • I need more vegetarian/healthy recipe ideas.

A Little Spat and A Pet Peeve

We have two dogs. My dog is a shih tzu named Louis, and my boyfriend has a mix named Jack. I adopted Louis through the SPCA a few years ago. We have had Jack several months now. We adopted him as a puppy, and he is CRAZY! Very hyper! We are still in the process of training him. He still jumps up on people and is very excitable.

Well... Unfortunately.... Jack had a little accident yesterday. He took a little pee on the bed. My boyfriend called to tell me about it. Luckily, it was on his side on the bed. (hehe!) Anyways, I get home and ask him if he has started the laundry. I swear he said he did. Yet around 9:00 p.m., I found out that he had not started the laundry, and all the bedding was just sitting in the bedroom. Needless to say, I was a little ticked. I don't understand why he would not start the wash. He said he didn't know what settings on the washing machine to use, but I fail to believe that. It's common sense! Come on! Put the bedding the dog peed on in the wash! Grr! It's like not putting the new roll of toilet paper on the roll. It's right there! Does he not see it?!?

Anyways, I was a little peeved at him, but as I always do I quickly got over it.

Slumlords on the Rise

I think I am a pretty reasonable person, and I try to get along with everyone. BUT, I cannot stand my landlord. He is the most unreasonable person I have ever met. This is saying something because I meet a lot of different/crazy/unreasonable people at my work.

I think everything in our rent house has either been replaced or worked on. We have lived in the house about four months. In that time, we had our carpet, oven, dishwasher and soon refrigerator replaced. He has had to work on the A/C Unit, shower and washing machine. I don't know who lived in the house before us, but it was in terrible condition. Maybe they were hoarders.

The landlord is not fond of me because I actually want him to fix things. God forbid! He told my boyfriend it wasn't his responsibility. Apparently, he is delusional.

I don't understand why people think they can rent houses and not take care of their renters.
